JetBlue recently announced the implications for its customers as the Northeast Alliance with American Airlines concludes. This comes after a federal judge in Boston ruled in May that the partnership between the two airlines must end due to concerns about competition limitations. JetBlue has decided not to appeal the decision and will instead focus on its planned acquisition of Spirit Airlines. However, the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit to block JetBlue's agreement to purchase Spirit for $3.8 billion.

In response to JetBlue's decision, American Airlines issued a statement expressing their understanding and respect for JetBlue's choice to prioritize addressing other antitrust and regulatory challenges. They emphasized that JetBlue has been a valuable partner, and both airlines will continue to work together to ensure a smooth travel experience for their shared customers without any disruptions to their travel plans.

The Northeast Alliance, which was announced in 2020, involved schedule coordination and revenue sharing on various routes between Boston and New York. JetBlue is the largest carrier at Logan International Airport.

JetBlue officials reassured customers that those who have already booked travel in the coming months can remain confident in their plans. The airline will individually reach out to any customers who may be affected to provide the necessary re-accommodation or refund.

JetBlue has provided the following information for customers as the Northeast Alliance winds down:

  1. Starting July 21, new codeshare bookings between JetBlue and American Airlines will no longer be available.

  2. For customers with existing bookings, TrueBlue or AAdvantage numbers must be added to the reservation before July 21 to continue earning points, status, and reciprocal benefits.

  3. TrueBlue points can still be accrued for tickets purchased before July 21, as long as the TrueBlue number is added to the booking before that date.

JetBlue expressed disappointment in discontinuing popular benefits like codesharing and reciprocal loyalty benefits, and they believe that the U.S. Department of Justice's opposition to these benefits is misguided. Despite the termination of these benefits due to the court ruling and the conclusion of the Northeast Alliance, JetBlue remains committed to minimizing disruptions to existing travel plans and delivering value, along with its award-winning product and service, to its customers.

The trial for the antitrust lawsuit regarding JetBlue's purchase of Spirit is scheduled for October. The government argues that the acquisition of Spirit by JetBlue would harm consumers by reducing competition and increasing airfares, according to the Associated Press.
